SPCM 306 Senior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 10:55 pm, May 13, 2008 |
1 of 1 people found the following evaluation helpful: He is a very passionate, knowledgeable person. He might come as too personal but in many times those personal stories are relevant to the course material. Very warmhearted, caring person. Taking his class will offer a real life story about the issue of intercultural communication. |

1 of 1 people found the following evaluation helpful: Ditto to the last eval on Eric. He is engaging, intelligent and he relates to students very well. I second the comment about having to hear so much about him having sex with his boyfriends, which came up nearly every day during summer class. It's offensive material(gay or hetero) and does not belong in this class at all. Other than that issue, Eric is SUPERB! |

SPCM 434 Sophomore Grade Earned: B Elective 1:31 am, Jul 22, 2010 |
This class was very interesting. It is more of a preview/preparation for traveling or studying abroad than anything else. The midterm and tests were very easy if you were familiar with terms. I did not study for the first test and did not do well because I was unable to do matching or fill in the blanks off the top of my head. But it is easy to cram the information in a day or two before the test. On a separate note, the other large assignments were two papers. They were very open end and creative (about a country of your choice, depending on syllabus). If you do not enjoy intensive research or have exceptional writing skills, do not take this class. It is graded on a very intensive college level which most students are not bs their way through it. Class attendance is very easy, but also very interesting and helpful for the tests. Aoki is VERY knowledgeable and experienced about communication, traveling, etc. Definitely take this class if you plan on traveling/studying abroad!

Eric is AWESOME!!! He really connects with his students and teaches in a way that relates to our real life situations. His classes are fun and you really do learn a ton! He is always willing to help outside of class and goes above and beyond to help you understand the material. One of the best professors that I have had in years!!

SP 310 Senior Grade Earned: N/A Required (Major) 2:39 am, Dec 20, 2004 |
1 of 2 people found the following evaluation helpful: Eric is amazingly personable, his class is informative and interesting, yet it was really hard to listen to him speak sometimes because he uses class, it seems, as a therapy session for himself. I know he uses his life as example, which is great, but he always talks about his homosexual life. Not that being homosexual is bad, but it's always appropriate to talk about when in class, to use homosexual examples is fine when the content he is teaching relates to homosexuality, but alot of times there are millions of other examples he could use. Other than that I think he is remarkably intelligent and you will definately learn something. come to class, he passes around attendance, and his spend time on his assignments and you will do well. |

SP 305 Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 12:06 pm, Aug 26, 2004 |
Eric is a great teacher, and he gets everyone involved in his classes, which is good. He tells great stories about his traveling, that are fun. but he needs to chill out with telling his students about having sex with his boyfriend. Keep your social life to yourself. Take him, he's good. Just that one complaint.

SP 306 Senior Grade Earned: B Required (Support) 12:54 am, Nov 29, 2002 |
Eric is one of the best and most talented professors I have had since coming to CSU. I actually learned something in his class. He is passionate about what he teaches, responsive to students and their needs and is one of the most eloquent lecturers I have had. His class is extremely difficult to get into which speaks volumes of his abilities. If you take a class with Eric, I promise you're in good hands.

SP 306 Graduate Student Grade Earned: A Elective 2:28 am, Dec 7, 2006 |
0 of 1 people found the following evaluation helpful: I understand people's feelings toward Eric, as he is very personable and warmhearted. But let's be frank here: It isn't the fact that he talks about his life as a gay man that is the problem, it's the fact that his life is ALL he talks about. I took an intercultural communication class from him, but do I remember anything about the content of the course? No. All I remember is his heartbreaking stories about losing his partner, about his trip to India, his trip to Turkey, his various poems... A previous evaluator said "he uses examples from his life, and that's great," but no, actually, it's not. I took Intercultural Communication, not Eric Aoki. As a fellow human, I care a lot about Eric's life experiences. As a student, I couldn't care less. Also, contrary to his own beliefs, he is a terrible writer. It's painful and embarrassing to hear his amateurish prose and verse read with such passion and confidence. I think Eric could be a great professor, but he will have to learn that it's not about HIM all the time. In fact, it never is. |

SPCM 332 Junior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 9:59 pm, May 16, 2008 |
1 of 5 people found the following evaluation helpful: Eric Aoki accompanies the worst class in the speech communication major with the most dull, boring, insignificant lecturing style I have ever witnessed. I cannot believe that anyone could consider interpersonal communication a legitimate field of study. This class made me ashamed to be a speech comm major which is a hard pill to swallow because of all the great professors in the department. I tend to prefer classes that are intellectually challenging and this class certainly was not. Along with Aoki's ridiculously terrible lectures was an absolutely terrible text book that used pages upon pages to state things that could have been summed up in a few sentences. There is not enough depth to interpersonal communication for it to be considered theory. In short, this class is a joke, steer far away from it if you consider yourself intelligent in any way, shape, or form. |
