FIN 370 Senior Grade Earned: A Required (Major) 11:57 am, Oct 31, 2009 |
1 of 1 people found the following evaluation helpful: The tests are extremely easy if you work her suggested problems, and she provides the solutions from the solutions manual. Conceptual test problems come straight from her slide's material, however reading the book is probably necessary because her lectures are unorganized, sporadic, and extremely fast paced. When she is "teaching," she reads straight from the slides or rants about material over our heads. About 1/2 of all the class periods are wasted with Dr. Ryan side tracking about something unrelated to the course. Everything I learned from this course came from reading the book and working the problems. The tests have one problem you work out (credit given for work shown), and then about 15 multiple choice questions. She has about two tricky questions per test, so just read the problems carefully. |

1 of 1 people found the following evaluation helpful: The homework load is insignificant. However that is the only enjoyable portion of the class. Professor Ryan insists on speeding through material and bringing up random comments. I will never take her again! |

she is better in 471 than 370 because she does not lecture more than a couple times in 471. She is a HORRIBLE lecturer, you can see the whole class roll their eyes every time she starts. This class is all case studies. You read a case, analyze it and present your findings to the class. You are in groups of about 5. you to 4 cases in total, by the end its pretty easy because its basically the same thing over and over. This class can be stressful and time consuming because the cases make you figure a lot out on your own, so just make assumptions, disclose them and go with them and you'll get through each case twice as fast--she does not count you down for making reasonable assumptions.

WATCH OUT FOR THIS WOMAN! I completed a finance/marketing double concentration and never experienced such terrible ethics from a professor. 90% of this class grade is based on group projects with the other 10% coming from professionalism. If you question anything she says or does she will hold it against you and will dock your grade (very very unethical I know). I raised my hand during one of the last days of class and told her that she misrepresented the final project because she had told us it would be easier than all of the earlier projects in the semester. The final project ended up taking twice as long as any of the other projects and all of us were very frustrated by this. I told her that and she got very defensive. My group was very smart and we all worked well together. We got A's or B's on all of our projects. We all receive the same grade being that it is a group project. I had an A after all the projects were completed and expected to get an A in the class but found out otherwise. She gave me a really low grade for professionalism even though I had great attendance and was very courteous in class. The other three people in my group all got A's in the class, I was the only one who got a B. So, if you keep your mouth shut and your head down, it is fine but if you go against her in any way, she will bring that hammer down. WATCH OUT!

Pat is a very nice woman, very flexible and understanding of individual circumstances that come up. She knows her stuff, and if you can get her to focus on the material, you'll find she is very competent at teaching it. Her big problem is that she zooms through the slides and materials very quickly and it makes it difficult to determine what is important and what is not. She also has this terrible habit of getting sidetracked on tangents and not really teaching anything. So if you take her class, you need to be prepared for lots of stories about her kids and recent divorce and her days in college. If you want to get anything out of this class, do the practice problems on your own and ask her to do problems in class instead of going over worthless slides. She is very reasonable to adjusting to student requests.

I took this class with Pat Fall 09 and I really liked herself when she is teaching, helping students, taking care about her students. She is one of my best professors and she never said "NO" to me. She is very nice in giving extension for turning projects. I really like her class and I would highly recommend her. Fin 370 4 exams plus final 3 projects

First, Pat is a really nice person and very willing to work with you. I was going to be out of town the day of the final dates for both sections and she was very willing to work with me. She is a very genuine and nice person. Second, Her class is a bit boring and she does indeed (as the person below said) straight up read off the slides. But just go cause sometimes there is useful info presented. Review thoroughly the problems you do in class, they are almost always on the exam. Third, the grade is made up of 4 exams, which are about 17 m.c. and 2 problems. Also there are 3 homework assignments.

Dr. Ryan is very enthusiastic about teaching and topics covered in this class. This class is challenging sometimes but grading policies are more than fair. If you do the optional homework problems she assigns from the book tests are cake. Homework is interesting and not overly difficult, one assignment took a substantial amount of time but they are always relevant to the course. This class is not easy but like someone else stated it is not supposed to be.

Patricia Ryan has by far been one of my favorite professors. She is very knowledgable and also willing to help outside of the classroom. She does talk fast, but it made me pay attention. The assignments are long and difficult, but I think they help prepare you for what you would be expected to do in a job situation. I nearly got a 100% in the class by simply spending time on the assignments and reading the chapters before the test. I would highly recommend this teach for any finance class.

Pat Ryan is definately something else, be prepared for that. But, I don't think she is as bad as everyone has made her out to be. SHE IS TOUGH. I learned a lot from her class though and I'm glad to have taken it from her.

Knows her stuff, but goes why too FAST in lecture, leaving students in the dust. Homeworks take up a lot of time so plan ahead. Grading system is a bit harsh. Exams are why too long for the time alloted. Even when the class average was in the D range she refused to instate a curve and was very rude when the students objected. Feeling of hopelessness grows as the semester passes. Advice: try this class with another professor, you'll probably learn something and your GPA won't suffer.

BF 370 Junior Grade Earned: B Required (Major) 7:51 pm, May 10, 2006 |
Professor Ryan is very knowledgble about what she teaches, but goes through information too quickly, probably because she chugs mountiain dews like it is her job. Her tests are hard and long, and she gives no curves or sympathy in the course, although she sometimes gives a few extra credit points. Basically I went into her class thinking she was a really nice, enthusiastic, teacher.....but she is very deceptive with her personality at first. Some days she is really nice, but out of no where she can be very unpleasant. I would recommend finding another teacher, but if you have to take her, she's not THE worst I've had, just not good.

Think of Fran Dresher on caffine, and that is Dr. Ryan. She talks super fast, goes over slides that have a ton of info in a matter of seconds. I missed so much information this semester because I couldn't even keep up with her. You have 4 homework assignments over the course of the semester with each one requiring a tremendous amount of time (especially the 3rd). Something that really bothered me was that she went off on tangents that were interesting from time to time, but never made a point out of them or somehow related them to her kids which i don't care about. If at all possible, try to find an alternative professor.

Terrible teacher. It is very clear that she understands her finance but she does a terrible time relating it to her students. She spends more time talking about her kids than on course material. She is very hard to understand because she talks like she is a hurry to fly through the material. Take this course with another teacher if possible.

Dr Ryan is a great teacher a real blessing to have in the finance department. She will definitely make you work for your grade but you learn a lot of information. Her tests are hard...no way around that but school isnt supposed to be easy... if you read the book and go to class and above all do the assigned problems you have have no problems getting a B. Her assignments arent difficult but she is a little anal on the grading, also the assignments can be a little longwinded especially doing the research on the 7 companies but you learn a lot about finding information about finding financial information. She is always in good spirit and very active throughout the lecture. I would recommend you take this teacher for BF370
