By far one of my favorite professors here at CSU. Dr. Sholders makes what could be a horribly boring class and actually makes it fun, interesting and interactive. Study hard tho - you will need to if you want a good grade in this class. Study study study study. He is very approachable, actually in his office during his office hours, more than eager to help and is a very nice person who is very knowledgeable about his specialty. I highly recommend Aaron for biochemistry.

Aaron is a graduate student, not even a professor. This is a really hard class and he does not make it any better. His notes were way to detailed, and he expected you to know them all! His tests were really hard and you needed to know the book for memory to pass. Our first exam the class avg. was in the fifties with no curve! This was his first time teaching but that is no excuse, we pay good money to learn here and I feel this was a waste of time and money. If you can get a different instructor I highly suggest it! He is a nice person but as a teacher, he should consider a different career!!!

I know that a lot of people say that chemistry is a weak point of theirs, and that Dr. Sholders was great at making a chemistry class fun, but it's absolutely true. I have never liked chemistry or found it particularly easy, but I was pleasantly surprised at how interesting and even fun the class was, and it's all because of the way Dr. Sholders taught the class. Furthermore, he was so flexible and approchable that I felt so comfortable asking him any question I had. I would absolutely highly recommend him and this class to anyone!

Dr. Sholders expects that students know the matrial in detail. Watch out for those multiple choice questions, they can be really tricky! I recorded the lectures then went back over them with my notes after class, which really helped me. I also went in a few times after class and talked to him, he was very helpful and friendly. You need to really know the material to do well in this course.

Aaron is a good teacher, and he is enthusiastic about the lab which makes it easier. But the lectures are horrible! The lab isn't too bad: the lab notebook is very time consuming, the problem sets aren't too bad (except for the fourth one) and the take home test is straight forward.

Dr. Sholders is a great professor! He is very animated in class and obviously interested in what he is teaching. This definitely makes class much more engaging. He is also not afraid to say he doesn't know something (and is always will to look it up for you), a nice change of pace. He posts old exams, which are helpful in studying. Skip the textbook, the exams only cover lecture material, and the lectures are very informative and easy to follow (so I didn't need to supplement my studying with the text).

Dr. Sholders is one of those rare professors who actually cares about his students. He is astute in recognizing student difficulties, and promptly and effectively deals with them. For example, for our class he totally changed to exam format so we could finish in 50 minutes - though it made his job of grading a lot more time consuming. He is also extremely personable and funny! However, be warned: his tests are hard! The questions are very tricky and require very careful reading. I barely pulled an A by the skin of my teeth, and I'm used to getting A's. Stay awake in class, ask about anything you're confused about (because it WILL be on the test), and do the study guide.

Aaron did a very good job making a horribly boring class somewhat tolerable. The class is tough, but if you do the work and go to his lectures, you will do fine. I wish I could have him for something a little more interesting to me.

Aaron is tough because he expects students to learn and understand, not just regurgitate material, but he's helpful and funny. He's super nice and even though I'm not in his class now he's still willing to talk and help me out with things. Take the lab with biochem, it's actually worthwhile.

This is the second best class I have taken at CSU (next to philosophy with Speer). Sholders is an amazing teacher who clearly cares about the material he presents. He is readily available and really helpful in office hours. He will sit with you for as long as you want. I have never had a teacher take so much time to answer questions. He stops, asks if there are any questions, and then scans the entire lecture room. If someone does ask a question he will do the same thing. SO far we are at least 3 days behind the syallbus schedule and he doesnt care. The test are difficult. Do the study guide that he posts. also look at the old test and more importantly the free response sections. the test is 100 pts multplie choice/matching/true/false and 33pts free response. In the free response he give you a choice of answering 3 out of the 5 questions. I go in and ask him about the old test free response. So far on both tests there has been a free response identical from the old test. Plus he gives two weekely quizzes. you have two chances to take them and if you work with a partner it is easy to get perfect scores on all of them, granted you remember to take them. He has a total of 30 extra credit points available in the class. i would take his class again in a heart beat

Best. Prof. Ever. He is amazing and makes people who hate cell bio/biochem learn it and like his class. I don't know anyone who didn't like it. basically, he is the best professor I've had at CSU.

I never thought I would pass Biochemistry the first time (or enjoy it for that matter!) but I did and I fully credit Dr. Sholders for it! He makes class fun and interesting, his content presentation is effective- he works hard to help you visualize the processes he presents rather than just telling you about them and he stops repeatedly during lecture to make sure everyone understands the material and answers any questions. Very important to go to class as much as possible to fill in the outlines he posts on RamCT. He gives online quizzes twice a week, they are fairly easy (if you go to class regularly)and he gives you two attempts at them. Overall the quizzes are worth 120 pnts, but he only counts 100 pnts, so you have an opportunity for 20 pnts extra credit. The exams are challenging, but not difficult (in my opinion) if you have completed the study guide he posts on RamCT. I LOVED this class and I would recommend taking it with Dr. Sholders if you want the best experience!

Aaron is an excellent professor who cares not only about his class but also about the faces in it. He takes the time to treat his students like people, not just ID numbers. He made this class SO interesting and fun (at 8 am!) that the material didn't seem difficult at all because it was enjoyable to learn. This is a great class. It filled in a lot of gaps for me. Also, Aaron is very approachable with respect to class concerns such as grades. He has some really funny stories about his family, too. It's so sweet how passionate he is about his wife and little boys.

Let me first say that I hate chemistry - but I LOVED this course. I am pleasantly surprised that I am able to rate biochem as one of the best courses I have taken at CSU, and I credit that entirely to Aaron. Aaron is a great teacher and does his best to make a very difficult, confusing, and potentially boring class interesting, fair, and doable. His grading system gives everyone the chance to pass and do well if you are willing to put in the work, and he is one of those teachers who is rooting for you all the way. He is very open to questions, to meeting during his office hours, and to making review sessions work for as many people as possible. The material is tough, no doubt, but if you are willing to work for a grade, you can get it. It's not like some classes where you put in a ton of work and get no return on your time. This class is also very interesting, as really brings together other sciences, such as biology, chemistry, and o-chem, and makes you think, "Ooooh - so that's why we learned that." It all finally makes sense.

He was extemely friendly and approachable and really tries his best to see everyone pass. This is a hard class, one of the hardest I've had at CSU, but that's not his fault, but he goes the distance to make the material somewhat interesting and see that you pass. You just have to do the work. It was beause of him that this is also one of my favorite courses. If you take this course, take it with Sholders

Aaron is the best professor I have ever had at CSU -- which is funny because he was just a PhD candidate when he taught our Biochemistry 351 course. He is by far the most comprehensive, entertaining and fair professor at CSU. He knows his material extremely well and tests only on what he teaches. He makes Biochemistry a lot of fun to learn, something I did not think was possible, but fair warning, his tests are challenging, but he offers a TON OF EXTRA CREDIT...50 points out of about 700 to be accurate. I ended up with an A+ even with a grade of about a 91 percent before my extra credit was added. He is a great professor nonetheless, always willing to answer your questions on email and during office hours. TAKE AARON SHOLDER'S CLASS FOR BC351!!!!

Aaron may be a grad student, but he is one of the top three professors I've ever had. Because he hasn't been teaching for decades, he remembers what it's like to be a student. His lectures are entertaining, he goes out of his way to be fair in his grading and he's quick to recognize when the class is struggling with a given concept. He isn't afraid to get behind schedule if that's what it takes to clarify things for the students. If you go to class, ask for help as soon as you need it and put forth reasonable effort, you'll be OK.

Aaron must have done a lot of work since the last reviewer took the class because I couldn't disagree more, maybe he just didn't go to the actual class sessions. If you go to the classes and the review sessions then you should have no trouble knowing what is going to be emphasized on the tests, I never even looked at his online notes. He gives tons of homework that really isn't that hard to pad your grade and with 5 tests no one is horribly important. He asked the class whenevr he wanted to change something and made sure to drop questions from the tests if most of the class got them wrong. His tangents about his family were usually pretty funny as they seemed to come at totally unexpected times. I think that if you have to take BC 351, he is the teacher you should stick with.

Shoulders is nice and funny. Beyond that...nothing. He will spend the first part of class with a riddle, OK that is cute. Then halfway through he breaks out the comedy routine with his children's exploits. What this has to do with biochem I will never know. So you end up with a huge amount of wasted time not learning biochem which will only hurt you in future classes. There are no dropped exams, everyone counts as well with weekly online quizzes. His exams are analytical and not memorization which is good. Now if he could just learn to teach and save the potty training stories for after class and quit wasting his students time and money.

I have heard there are 2 kinds of people--those who like Biochemistry, and those who like Organic Chemistry. I fall into the latter category, but there are parts of biochemistry that are "radical". Dr. Sholders teaches the material very thoroughly and clearly, although something to be aware of is that his focus is on energetics--thermodynamics and kinetics, which is not my cup of tea. Dr. Sri has a different focus, from what I've heard. Dr. Sholders posts weekly quizzes which are helpful, but be aware that his multiple choice questions are tricky, and are analytical questions, not simple definitions and memorization. On the plus side, he is extremely understanding, kind, and does care a lot about helping you. He will answer certain questions when you are taking the test--and that helped me a lot.

Aaron is the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. It was quite a pleasant surprise after suffering through organic. He made classes interesting, informative, and humorous. His test aren't overly difficult as long as you go to class and pay attention. I would definitely recommend Aaron for biochemistry!

If I have to ever hear another story about potty training I will scream. This class should be called Biochem Comedy Hour but it is not funny because I had to take it and pay to listen EVERY DAY to what his children flushed down the toliet on a daily basis. What a joke.
