1 of 1 people found the following evaluation helpful: Abkarian absolutely knows his stuff. I imagine he's an excellent researcher and author. However, you know how some teachers like their students to do well, and others, well, don't? He falls into the latter category. His tests are insane. Also, making students comfortable in his class does not seem to be a priority for him. AT ALL. HD 400 is required, so take it, show up to class, and grit your teeth. The good thing is that I, along with many of my classmates, failed almost every test and still got a C. |

Not as bad as everyone says but definitely not good! Scared the crap out of everyone on the first day of class but I never went to lecture and just read and outlined the book before a test and got a B in the class. I found lectures to be pointless it was just slowly going through the book which I could read faster! I didn't feel like he taught me anything through lecture. Tests were a bit random at times but fairly easy as long as you knew the book material!

Great class, great material, horrible professor! Abkarian is by far the worst i've ever had at CSU. He really talks down to students and treats them like they're a classroom of 13 year olds. His tests have really random questions that make you think "what? did we even learn about this?" He is not here to help students, he is here to give everyone an average C grade. He doesnt use power point or presentation guides, he just lectures for the whole hour and 15 minutes. The best days are when his TA teaches. If you can, avoid this professor!

I think he was a great teacher, He was VERY clear about what he thought was important and didn't waste your time with what he didn't believe to be so. He was nice, and did take stuff right from the book, but he knew his stuff well and covered some topics the class was interested in talking about, and didn't test us over it.

I took Abkarian's HD101 class and did very well in it without attending much of his lectures. (It was at 8am and he takes most material straight from the book). HOWEVER, his HD400 class is completely different. It was one of the most difficult classes I have taken in all of my college career! I usually do well on tests and I studied harder for these exams than ever before and still barely passed with a C!!! My advice to you is, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Yes Abkarian definitely knows his stuff but he also must think that we have PhD's too because that's how much he expects you to know. I knew 4 other girls in the class and none of them passed and also needed the class to graduate! Luckily this class is not required so just find another class to fulfill your requirements so you won't have to go through what I did!! Good Luck!!

He is not the best at making students comfortable to answer or ask questions - he can act very superior at times. However, I actually enjoyed his class because he knows his stuff. He is really into language, so I thought it was cool how he tied it into his material moreso than another professor might. My advice is to READ THE BOOK, don't miss class, and DO NOT READ OR DO OTHER HOMEWORK during classtime - you will regret it. I did well in his class because I knew he meant business and I didn't put his stuff on the back burner. The tests are not bad if you pay attention and read.

I feel like the lectures were good however I agree with the others when they say he talks down. Kinda made it feel like a highschool coures. He is funny, sometimes. my biggest complaint by far is that i felt like i was doing great in the class( I take great notes, only missed one day, and lightly read the book) and his tests do not reflect the material we covered in class. Have you ever gotten a test question and wondered where in the hell a question came from--- his whole test, all of them, are like that!

Keeps your interest in the subject matter the way he presents information. He is very energetic and works well with those who have disabilities.

If you have taken psychology, sociology, and biology, there is absolutely no need for you to take this class unless you really need it for grad school or something. As for Dr. Abkarian, he talks down to the class a lot and takes up a lot of the lecture time explaining terms should already be part of the average college student's vernacular. One idea for succeeding in the class--READ THE BOOK! Lots of test questions come directly from it, and besides, you paid a bundle of money for it.

1 of 2 people found the following evaluation helpful: This was my favorite class of the semester. He has a good sense of humor and I enjoyed his lectures. PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIDEBARS AND MAKE SURE TO COME TO CLASS - IF YOU DON'T YOU WILL NOT DO WELL AT ALL ON THE TESTS. Pay attention to what he says (especially side notes) when you are in class - he uses a lot of sidenotes on the tests. He knows his information well - pay attention to the language parts of cognitive development, because it's his specialty and he likes to talk about it a lot. |
